His youth

His upbringing and study

John Calvin is born in the French city of Noyon on 10 July 1509. His father was financial  administrator in the cathedral in Noyon and he wanted his children to become important persons. His mother, Jeanne, died at a low age. She was a pious and serious mother. John had four brothers and two sisters. Father wanted John to become priest and arranged that the church financed the study of his son. At an age of twelve John became chaplain. The work was done by a poor priest but all the money was for Calvin. At an age of fourteen John went to Paris to study Latin. Throught this Calvin was made able to do his work. He studied with great zeal and strictness. He was from his birth a quiet and serious boy. He was Catholic and believed what the Roman Catholic Church learned him. Nevertheless he goes often to groups where the people read and study the Bible. The same as for Zwingli, the Bible was the way to see that the Catholic Church was wrong in some of its doctrines. Calvin still not broke with the Catholic Church and followed faithfully the lessons on school. His teacher were satisfied with him. Suddenly the friendship turned into enmity, his father got into a quarrel with a spiritual. He did not want his son to became a priest anymore and adviced him to study law. Calvin left Paris and started to study law in Orleans. In Orleans he also studied the Bible piously and the Lord blessed this to his heart.

A sudden conversion

in 1533 the big reversion came in his life, he was 24 years old. The Lord conversed him. From this moment may taste the happiness of knowing the Lord as his father and choose the side of the afflicted protestants. The most important question for him became: 'How does the Lord have to be honored?' In Paris were at that moment terrible persecutions.  Martyrs get fearful punishments, only for the fact that these people believe in God. They are for example roasted above a fire.

Escaped from Paris

Also in the year 1533 the university in Paris got a new headmaster. His name was Nicolas Cop, a friend from Calvin. Together they made the speech that Nicolas Cop will speak. In this speech there was spoken no word about the important Catholic day which was also on that day. All the people listened with a great silence to the headmaster, actually the whole speech was protestant. The consequences came, Cop had to justify himself before the French government. He did not go to the government, but fled out of France. But the people came to know that Calvin was complicity. Calvin also fled with friends out of the city, the Lord had still work for him.

A wandering student

Calvin fled as a disguised winegrower out of Paris, in Paris is was not safe for him to stay. He fled to Bazel, here he wrote his famous book 'The Institutes of the Christian religion'. In this book he protected the Protestants against the fearfull Catholics. During this work he wrote a letter to the king of France to ask if he could stop the persecutions of the protestants. Unfortunately, the persecutions only became heavier and heavier. Calvin did not stay in Basel.  He wandered much in this time, everywhere he was rushed like a wild animal. The Lord took care over him, his task on this world was still big. About this task you can read more on the pages Geneva and The reformer.
